Becoming a hairdresser takes a lot of work. In cosmetology school, students learn the basics of the craft and hone in on the skills required to pass the State Board test. Once they receive their license, they are legally able to perform any service deemed suitable under the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology. At Virtue Salon, we provide continued education through a program designed to enhance those foundational skills and build up our Apprentices to begin the journey in becoming a highly trained professional behind the chair.
Regardless of previous experience, each new hairdresser at Virtue Salon will complete the Apprentice Training Program (ATP). During the training, technical skills are expanded and enhanced. But, technical skills are only part of what makes a Virtue Salon hairdresser successful. The culture and community of the salon are what makes them well-rounded. As soon as somebody starts their journey through the ATP they are encouraged to get to know everybody else. The team regularly spends time together during off hours which helps to build our friendships. (YES! We’re all friends). Immersing yourself into the team creates trust and openness which makes for quality communication and teamwork during the work day.
We strive for the most professional and advanced technical skills. Each Monday is reserved for class time. We discuss and focus on different topics during these times; color theory, color placement, knowledge of our color lines, cutting theory, Sassoon cutting systems, waxing, blow drying, and product knowledge. Once a discussion is complete, models are used for the Apprentices to observe. They are able to interject with questions and opinions throughout the entire service. It's extremely fun to have a guest in as a model for the ATP. They get first hand exposure to what training really looks like at Virtue. The Apprentices also provide their own models for the services and are observed in order to better coach and train them.
One of my favorite things that starts happening during their hands-on part of our ATP, is the sense of confidence that quickly develops. At first, the Apprentices need a lot of help and guidance with what they’re doing but this doesn’t last long! It is extremely fulfilling to be able to observe from a distance to see them do what is needed on their own.
We truly work our hardest to make this career path fun and exciting for everyone involved. There are some days designated for test outs, but again, we really want to highlight the creativity and passion that the craft of hairdressing is all about!
Even after a hairdresser has completed the ATP, we provide education to continue enhancing our team’s skills. We have an in house education team, Stay Sharp Nation, that hosts classes for Virtue team members as well as other hairdressers. Our goal is to be innovators on the cusp of the industry. Our Apprentice Training Program in combination with continued education create the perfect opportunity for us to be life-long learners and teach one another the ever-evolving craft of hairdressing.
