About a year and a half ago, I decided to make the arduous trek to becoming a hairstylist. Inspired by being on a more sales end of the industry for a couple years, the switch over to working behind the chair didn’t come as a surprise to most. I won’t bore you with the overabundance of details from school, though I will tell you there was only one salon I had in mind from the get go to call my future home.
Seeking additional education within a salon was my top priority when deciding where I wanted to thrive behind the chair. Flash forward to August of 2014, a mere five months ago, when I began my journey as an apprentice at Virtue Vegan Salon!
Having a heavy influence in education, Melanie takes each of her new stylists under her wing to deliver the best in-salon education in town. That being said, myself and Bri, my fellow apprentice, are submerged in the apprenticeship program.
Every Monday is spent exclusively with Melanie. #MondayswithMelanie generally include a slew of educational goodness. Some time is spent diligently studying our Vidal Sassoon cutting and coloring systems. Other time is spent practicing these systems hands on with lovely mannequins. But most time is dedicated to working on live models!
With Melanie’s guidance and discipline, we've honed in on our skills and began exceeding them in strides. Within five months, it's safe to say I've attained more skills and knowledge than I would have gotten just jumping behind the chair at another salon. It is truly something to be grateful for.
Along with our hands-on time, the apprenticeship comes with the task of assisting the other talented stylists. The program speaks volumes just from their work alone; shadowing them on my downtime has truly built up knowledge more so than ever. Each girl has something amazing to offer with their skill sets, but it's all consistent within our cutting, coloring and styling systems.
As my apprenticeship comes to an almost end, I have a slew of written and practical test-outs to complete to ready me for Junior Stylist status. With the continued training provided by Mel and the other fine ladies at the salon, I'm confident that I'll do well with my future in the salon. It's safe to say that the apprenticeship program at Virtue Salon is literally as good as it gets, as well as the perfect fit for me. But, we already knew that, didn't we?
To aspiring stylists in Columbus, Ohio, you'd be crazy not to check out the salon for your behind the chair future! The apprenticeship will have an opening once myself and Bri enter Junior stylist territory, so the spot could be yours!
