What you need to know before donating your hair
The most exciting part of my job is using my creativity to make a difference in the lives of others. Every day, I get to help guests relax, take a break and feel good about themselves. And on some days, I get to do this while making a huge difference in the lives of children who struggle with hair loss. The best part is, you can join too!
There are many medical reasons for why children suffer with hair loss, including cancer, Alopecia, Trichotillomania, burns and other conditions. Over the years, we’ve established relationships with organizations that provide these children with beautiful wigs.
At Virtue Salon, we trust the organization Children With Hair Loss (CWHL) with generous donations of hair from you, our guest.
For over 15 years, this non-profit charity has provided excellent service to kids that are dealing with hair loss due to medical reasons. Children helped by CWHL are provided custom wigs made out of human hair completely free of charge. And my favorite part about this charity is that every year, children helped by CWHL can receive a new hair replacement and hair care kit until their 21st birthday, again, totally free of charge.
Historically there were a lot of stipulations to donating hair. Part of the thing we love about CWHL is there ability to accept all types of hair. A lot has changed over the years in regards to type of hair and length of hair you need in order to donate.
Here is a list of the types of hair CWHL accepts when the hair is in good condition:
- Chemically Treated
- 8" or longer
By those standards almost anyone can donate! This is not limited to women either. So, gentlemen, if you are tired of your man-bun and your hair is in good condition, what are you waiting for? Call Virtue Salon if you have any questions about these standards or if you would like to schedule an appointment.
When scheduling, let our front desk coordinator know that you plan to donate your hair. This is necessary because we allow more time in the appointment to prepare the hair for donation. At Virtue, in order to accumulate the maximum amount of usable hair for your donation we gather the hair in smaller ponytails all around the head, which takes a little more time than a usual cut.
On the day of your appointment, arrive with clean, completely dry hair and your stylist will take care of the rest!
To send in hair donations after your appointment, you have two choices. We can send in your hair donation for you, or, we can send you home with your hair donation in a plastic bag and a brochure for you to fill out and send in yourself. When filling out the brochure you have the option to buy a t-shirt or make a monetary donation to CWHL in addition to your hair donation.
Donating your hair not only helps children but it is also fun! Changing up your hair could be the very thing you need to freshen up your style. Look at our Facebook or Instagram page to find inspiration if you are thinking about donating and going shorter. Many celebrities have dared to go shorter and the outcome is amazing.
